Early childhood caries is caused by prolonged
nursing from the bottle and is most harmful when taken to bed.
This type of feeding, with liquids high in carbohydrates, can
lead to severe tooth decay. Nursing bottle decay can be prevented
by not putting the baby to sleep with a bottle, and by discontinuing
bottle by the age of twelve months. If the pediatrician or parent
detects decay, the bottle should be discontinued and the child
should be referred to a pediatric dentist. The pediatric dentist
can restore these teeth so that no problems will occur in the
permanent dentition. |
