Eighty percent of cavities are found on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Food accumulates in the pits and fissures of these teeth, causing plaque build-up and decay. Sealants can be applied to certain teeth, creating a protective coating that does not allow food and bacteria to accumulate. Sealants are a form of prevention of decay on teeth with deep pits and fissures. They last many years and have been clinically proven to prevent tooth decay.
